Junior Readers Benefit with Two-View DM-DBT for Breast Lesion Characterization

A French study team, led by Antonia Boisselier, found that junior readers of breast images benefited markedly in using two-view digital mammography plus digital breast tomosynthesis (DM-DBT) to characterize breast lesions. The study compared “the performance in breast lesion characterization of one-view mediolateral (MLO) digital mammography plus digital breast tomosynthesis (DM-DBT) versus one-view craniocaudal (CC) DM-DBT versus two-view DM-DBT.” They found:

  • “There [are] no statistically significant differences for characterization of breast lesion between the MLO-only and CC-only DM-DBT readings, so if only 1 DM-DBT view is used, this can be either the CC or MLO view.
  • Having both views for characterization of breast lesion is significantly better than either single view alone for the readers as a group and for the junior radiologists, but not for the senior radiologists.
  • DM-DBT with two views is useful for breast lesion characterization for less experienced readers.”

“Our results support the use of two-view DM-DBT for breast lesion characterization when the readers are inexperienced. There is no significant difference between CC and MLO views when diagnosis is performed with one view,” wrote Boisselier, et al. The study was published In the European Journal of Radiology.
