Liver Images Acquired During Cardiac CT can Reveal Fatty Liver Disease Using 3d Liver Segmentation

Dr. Suvasini Lakshmanan says that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) “shares multiple risk factors with cardiovascular disease and independently predicts increased risk of cardiovascular disease and its associated outcomes,” summarizes Erik Ridley of AuntMinnie. The liver is routinely imaged during a cardiac CT exam.

In research presented at the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, Dr. Lakshmanan reported that researchers from the Lundquist Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA, found “serial assessments of NAFLD on cardiac CT will allow for future research to evaluate the effect of anti-inflammatory or anti-atherosclerotic therapies on cardiovascular disease and fatty liver.”
